Bunk Bed Safety
by Linda WatsonBunk beds are a very popular choice among parents for their children's rooms. Bunk beds are very convenient for allowing more space in your child's room. However, there are a few rules and precautions that should be followed regarding Bunk Bed Safety. Here are a few do's and don'ts to ensure your child's safety in a bunk bed. Children under six years old should not sleep on the top bunk. Younger children commonly fall in their sleep. They can also fall out of the top bunk while playing on it. Younger children must know that the bed is for sleeping and the floor is for playing on. Make sure there is no furniture with sharp corners nearby and toys should be cleaned up from around the bed in case your child should accidently fall. It is important that your children always use the ladder to climb up and down from the top bunk and not the side rails or any end rails so there will not be any increased risk of a fall. When purchasing your bunk bed be sure it meets the current safety standards. Affixed to the frame there should be a label showing you the safety. It is also important to check the bolts and screws periodically to make sure everything is secure. While most bunk beds are usually placed against the wall, the top bunk should have guardrails on all sides of the bed to prevent your child from getting stuck between the wall and the bed. The spacing of the guardrail is also important. A large gap between the lower guardrail and the bed frame could possibly cause your child to become wedged between their mattress and the guardrail, that’s why the Maximum gap should be no more than 9cm between the lower guardrail and bed frame. Bunk bed mattresses come in a variety of sizes: Please be sure your mattress fits the bed properly, your mattress should fit snugly against all sides of the bed. Using the wrong size mattress could cause a gap between the headboard or footboard. Here is another option you can also use for bunk beds. Most bunk beds can be converted into two single beds, if you have the space available you may want to consider using two single beds if your children are still a little young to understand the precautions and rules of the bunk beds, this would be a great option to consider and would give you a peace of mind until your children get a little older.
