Choosing The Right Bunk Bed

With the huge selection of bunk beds available on the market today it can sometimes be a daunting task in choosing the right bunk bed to fit your needs. There are so many to choose from, there are twin bunk beds, full over full bunk beds, futon bunk beds, loft bunk beds, bunk beds with drawers, bunk beds with desks, the list is endless! What's a parent to do? Here are some things to take into consideration when it comes to choosing the right bunk bed to fit you and your child's needs.

An important first step is to measure the space you have available:

It's important to measure the height of the room from floor to ceiling to make sure there will be at least two feet of clearance from the top bunk to the ceiling. Nobody wants to start off their day bumping their head on the ceiling! Most bunk beds are about 5 ½ to 6 ft tall. You might also want to measure the length and width of the area you plan on putting up the bunk bed in order to make sure it doesn't take up to much space in the room. With all the different styles of bunk beds on the market today, finding one to fit your living space shouldn't pose a problem.

Decide who the Bunk bed is for:

When I chose a bunk bed for my daughter I knew exactly what I needed it for. As she became a preteen there were always an endless stream of friends coming over to hang out in her room and most of the time spending the night. With that in mind I opted for a Futon Bunk Bed giving them a place to sit when hanging out in her room and a place to sleep when I got the ever so often big question that goes like this, " Mom can _____ spend the night?" I hated to have to make the poor kid sleep on the floor!

If you have a relatively small space and you need to accommodate small children, a Twin bunk bed might do the trick. Just keep in mind that children under six should not sleep on the top bunk.

If you have a student, something like a study loft would be an excellent choice. Some come with desks and some come with space to add a desk. There are many loft beds to choose from in a variety of styles and prices.

If you have two older children sharing a room a Full Over Full would be a great choice. It will provide the extra sleeping area older children need and still allow space in their room so they don't have to feel crammed in.

Storage is a big concern for many parents. There are many bunk beds that provide extra storage with drawers and shelves built right into them giving you the added space you need for storing clothes, toys, and other items.

Metal or Wood?

This of course is a matter of preference and what fits in with your room décor. There are an amazing amount of styles to choose from in metal or wood. There are bunk beds that are geared toward boys and bunk beds that are geared toward girls, bunk beds with ladders, bunk beds with slides and tents, the list goes on and on. To me this is the fun part of the shopping!

As you can see, bunk beds are not only a great solution for solving the problem of space verses needed sleeping area but they are also great for solving a variety of other problems. I hope this has been helpful in giving you some suggestions for getting you on the right path toward choosing the right bunk bed to fit you're your families needs.
